AM & FM radio stations- Blog #4

Radio stations are a great source to discover new information and stay updated on what’s going on in today’s world. The FM radio station I decided to listen to was 97.5 the Fanatic. This radio station is the first FM sports talk radio show and they broadcast out of Philadelphia. The amount of commercials in a 20-minute span was 6 minutes, 33 seconds which came out to be a percentage of 31.65%. I find this radio station very informative because I am interested in sports and I like how interactive the show is because they take calls from actual fans and listen to their opinions. I enjoy the fact that they take fans calls because they feed off of people’s opinions and put their own input on based off what fans call in and say. When I listened to to broadcast for 20-minutes I tuned in at where they were interviewing an ESPN insider and were focusing on mainly football talk which attracted and made me focus in more detail. The amount of commercials was more in blocks and they would take a 5-6 commercial break and then come back on radio for 10-15 minutes and then repeat the same commercial format. I listen to sports talk radio often which is why I chose to use this station as the FM station I listened to. The main portion of information they were broadcasting for that 20-minutes was about the NFL. They mentioned the NFL combine approaching and free agency. Overall I enjoy FM radio stations more simply because they make it more interesting and interactive.

The AM station I chose to listen to was KYW 1060 news radio. I chose this station because I felt as if it is a very known news station and I could gather a good amount of data from it. The length of the total commercials within 20-minutes came out to be 7 minutes, 35 seconds which came to be a percent of 37.1%. I find AM station broadcast to be very boring because the people broadcasting speak in a very monotone voice which makes it hard to listen to for a long period of time. The commercials included different promotions and advertisements for newspapers, banks, self-promotion of their station, and car advertisements. Also in comparison to the FM stations commercials they took breaks very often. The commercials for the AM station were every 4-5 minutes but they were shorter commercials compared to the FM station.  The various different topics they talked about included politics, the election that is approaching, president Obama, also they speak about a lot of different current events that are occurring around the world. Also in their broadcast they have many different people that report the news and they have different segments for traffic, weather, and sports. Overall I enjoy FM radio compared to AM radio because AM radio does not make it very interactive and they get right to the point compared to FM radio where they are more interactive and make the show much more interesting.

"Documents Reveal More Litigation in Manning Case." New Details Revealed in Manning Litigation with Ex-Tennessee Trainer. N.p., n.d. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.

The magazine I chose to use was sports illustrated because it is one of the most well-known sports magazines. The article I read about was about the recent allegations that surfaced about Peyton Manning. in 2002 there was a lawsuit brought against him that has to do with his college career at Tennessee University. The incident goes all the way back to 1996 were Manning was excused of acting wrongful towards trainer Jamie Naughright at Tennessee University. The article highlights the key points of the lawsuit the timeline of events leading to the case, and why it is being brought back up in in 2016. The original incident was that Peyton Manning “mooned” a teammate but Naughright claimed that “Peyton Manning placed his naked butt and rectum on her face” and she filed a lawsuit against him claiming he did do those wrongful acts and described it as “sexual assault”. Naughright filed a claim of multiple acts of harassment in August 1996 and says that “he pulled his pants down and exposed himself to me, as I was examining his foot and asking me several personal questions”.

In 1997 Naughright and the University of Tennessee mutually agreed to keep it confidential, she received 300,000, multiple items of championship memorabilia, accepted job termination, and to maintain confidentiality about the situation. In 2001 Peyton Manning and his father Archie Manning authored a book Manning: A Father, His Sons, and a Football Legacy. The book has references in it about the “mooning” incident and mentioned a “female trainer” and the book also accuses the female trainer having a “vulgar mouth” referring to her list of complaints against Manning from the past. In May of 2002 there was another lawsuit filed by Naughright against Peyton Manning, Archie Manning, John Warren Underwood (a  ghostwriter of the book), as well as the publishing company. Naughright filed for defamation based off the statements in the book. Even though it was said that it is not a criminal offense to make those type of statements she still filed a lawsuit seeking $15 million in compensatory and $15 million in punitive damages.

Finally, by 2003 both parties reached a confidential settle agreement which resolved the 2002 defamation case. Within 2 years there was another lawsuit filed again by Naughright and this time she claimed that there was a breach in the 2003 defamation settlement. January 2005 is when she filed the claim about the settlement breach but buy by July of 2005 the case was resolved and they reached yet another settlement. Overall I am not sure why there were 3 different lawsuits filed from Naughright against Manning but I think it is still a really important matter to be brought to everybody’s attention.

Self Introduction

Let me start out by saying my name and then ill give you a little bit of background knowledge and how I ended up in Kutztown. Well first thing first my name is John Kane and I am senior here at Kutztown University. I was born and raised in Philadelphia and still live there. Also I am a Sports Management major trying to obtain a minor in Communications hence why I am in this course.

When I was in high school I only applied to 4 schools, West Chester, Penn State Abington, Millersville, and of course here. It was between here or Millersville, but I would have to go to the summer program so I made my choice to come here.

Originally I wanted to be an engineer just because I thought it would be really cool to do that. Then I realized math wasn't my strong point so that idea went out the window. Coming into my freshman year I chose to major in business management and I struggled slightly and I decided to choose a major that I would really enjoy. I always wanted to work in the sport field so I decided why not major in Sports Management because it will give me the best opportunity to obtain my goal. Outside of the classroom I enjoy hanging out with my friends, watching and playing sports, and overall just having fun in life.

Okay now let me transition into the reflection of my professors blog. First let me start off by saying I thought this had an empowering message and was an interesting blog with a lot to tell in just a few short paragraphs. Also I think todays society completely revolves around social media and all the different aspects of media. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, etc. is around us everywhere and most people can't even go an hour without at least looking at a social media site. I think overall it has a true meaning of the way we perceive social media and it gives great examples of  social media.
